Emily Demers - Cancer
Emily is a daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and breast cancer survivor. She writes: "Before cancer, I was a daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and advocate. My passion was orphan care, and I spent most of my professional and personal life involved in adoption advocacy and traveling the world to care for children in need. When breast cancer came into my life, I was 33 years old, and my whole world was turned upside down. No family history. No BRCA-gene. No logical reason for the disease to hit me at such a young age or with such an aggressive diagnosis. If not for my Christian faith and an amazing support network, living life with cancer would have been even more challenging. Today, I am still the daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and advocate that I was before cancer... but I also now wear the title of Survivor and Foster Mom. There is much life to live beyond the diagnosis! Because of my young age at diagnosis, I will always be closely monitored by my doctors, but I am very grateful to have no evidence of disease today!"
